Digestive Problems

Most people, at some point in their life will probably have a problem within their digestive system. This can vary from constipation, acid reflux, bloating, diarrhoea and IBS to name but a few gastrointestinal problems. Our digestive system can create a host of health problems if one is eating foods that they may be intolerant or allergic to. For example many people are allergic to the proteins in milk and may have had a series of health problems related to this for the whole of their life. Wheat is another foodstuff that many people are intolerant to. Over the years we have cut out many of the different crops of wheat and are now tending to rely on one particular variety, called Durham wheat. It has a high yield and is fairly pest resistant and is therefore a good choice for farmers. On the negative side for some consumers the protein fraction called gluten is very hard for some people to digest and can cause inflammation, bloating, constipation and many other related health issues.

Acid Reflux

This is a fairly common problem with large percentages of the population being on antacids of one type or another e.g. omeprazole (a protein pump inhibitor). Many foods eaten on a daily basis can be contributing to this problem and it is not always caused by overproduction of acid. It may, in fact be due to the lack of enough digestive enzymes. This can lead to foods not being digested properly and the last thing eaten e.g. fruit may break down fairly quickly and start to ferment causing burping and belching. During my years as a nutritionist I have come across a number of foodstuffs responsible for creating acid reflux and these could just be omitted from the diet. Other things that may be responsible could be as simple as eating too quickly and forgetting to chew food properly.

Constipation

This extremely common problem can be corrected with good dietary management with the auto-intoxification for people suffering chronic constipation going on for years. This can lead to other health issues such as headaches and bad skin as toxins are pushed to other areas. For many they are simply not drinking enough water but may be consuming cups of diuretic coffee. A diuretic expels extra fluid from the body dehydrating the cells. If one is allergic or intolerant to a particular food occasionally the body reacts by appearing to hold onto the foodstuff leading to constipation. For others the lack of fibre from fruit, vegetables and soluble grains e.g. can lead to this problem. There are many good foods that one can include to ensure they remain clean and healthy both inside and out

Diarrhoea

This problem can be very debilitating as the sufferer may not have any idea of what the offending food is and may become scared to go out in case of being caught out when there is no toilet around. The fear of this and the adrenaline thus produced often exacerbate the problem, leading to a vicious circle. Our body may become low in certain nutrients due to poor absorption as a result of reduced transit time.

A nutritional consultation spots the offending food and it can be easily replaced for better choices. This condition is also very dehydrating as lots of excess fluid is being expelled from the body.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (I.B.S.)

Irritable bowl syndrome appears to be a fairly common problem nowadays and is the general term for anyone suffering from abdominal pain and cramps, constipation and/or diarrhoea. It can be very painful, embarrassing and debilitating and for some may have been going on for years. Again there are many foods which can create this condition and once removed from the diet the sufferer can start to lead a normal life again.

Bloating/Pain

Any poorly digested food can lead to pain and/or bloating and this may also be the result of overuse of antibiotics which may have upset ones' bowel flora, especially if they have never taken probiotics or live bacteria to correct the situation. There is a simple treatment plan to get one back into balance. Having plenty of good bacteria within the gut is essential for optimum health and a strong immune system and is thought to be important for longevity. It may have been the case that a number of antibiotic courses were taken by someone as a child and it is still having a detrimental effect upon their health into adulthood. Wind from excess gas production by bacteria or poorly digested food can be extremely painful and one may feel they are going to have a heart attack which is a very scary situation. Indigestion is a common occurrence but with nutritional help the discomfort can be reduced or alleviated.

Our digestive systems are also extremely affected by our current levels of stress. When we are under stress our digestive system shuts down - this is the bodies normal response to stress. It is no wonder that many people with hectic jobs have digestive problems. Therefore as well as looking at our diet and making the necessary alterations we also need to address stress levels. Lorna has the tools to enable you to do this and it will be included within the treatment plan.
